How to add a BPMN Diagram macro depends on the hosting option your Confluence runs in.

Server

If you are running on a Confluence Server instance you can add a BPMN diagram by

  1. Click on Insert more content → BPMN Diagram

  2. Or type {bpmn to open the macro shortcut menu

The diagram appears directly where you inserted it on the page.

Cloud

If you are running on a Confluence Cloud instance you can add a BPMN diagram by

  1. Click on Insert → View more ...

  2. Search for "BPMN" and find the BPMN Modeler Enterprise

  3. Or type /bpmn to open the macro shortcut menu

The diagram appears directly where you inserted it on the page.

|Since 3.24.0-ENTERPRISE.|

You can create a BPMN diagram in various ways - either create a blank BPMN diagram from scratch, or import an existing one from an internal or external source. The following options are available:

  • Create a blank BPMN diagram

  • Make a copy of an existing BPMN diagram (including its versions), cf [BPMN Modeler] Import & Export Import from Confluence Attachment

  • Upload a BPMN diagram file in XML (.bpmn)

  • Import a BPMN diagram from a Version Control System (VCS), cf https://viadee-app-support.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/BMED/pages/3440850/BPMN+Modeler+Import +Export#Importing-from-GitLab-SERVER-%7C-DATA-CENTER-Cloud%5BhardBreak%5Dand-Bitbucket-SERVER-%7C-DATA-CENTERfrom VCS

Please be aware that some options are only available if the Confluence page is once published, and not in draft.

To edit an existing diagram, you can either edit the macro in Edit page mode or use the Edit diagram - button in page view. On the left side you have a palette including the BPMN 2.0 elements - simply drag and drop them on the canvas. Element types can be changed via the wrench symbol at each drawn element individually.

For a perfect modeling flow, you may append the next element directly from the last added element by clicking on the suggested options to continue. This will also automatically insert connecting flow elements.

There are tools to optimize your modeling experience.
These two can be found in the left pallet:

  • Space Tool: add or remove space between elements

  • Lasso Tool: capture and selection of elements at once

Additional functionalities are accessible via the navigation bar:

  • Undo and redo your last changes (via Edit)

  • Reset the diagram (via File)

For better collaboration, you can leave comments to single process elements to start a discussion with your team members. Each process element has an expandable box containing all comments including timestamp and author. To send your team members a notification you can tag them with a mention. As in Confluence, start by typing '@' and search for your team mate's name.

It is also possible to mark a comment as resolve and even delete all resolved comments attached to one element.

Just as any other overlayed icon, the comments indicator can be configured in the diagram settings or temporarily hidden via the toolbar. Alternatively, go to View in the navigation bar to set temporary display settings.
